What is National Dog Day ?

National Dog Day is celebrated anually on August 26th. It was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige, also the founder of National Puppy Day.

National Mutt Day and National Cat Day and many more philanthropic days are celebrated to draw attention to the plight of animals and encourage adoption. The date of August 26th is symbolic, as it’s the date that Colleen’s family adopted her first dog “Sheltie” when Colleen was 10 years old. National Dog Day is the only dog holiday that celebrates ALL DOGS, mixed and purebred.

National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. The mission is to help the public recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.

National Dog Day is against any kind of breed ban. Dogs should not have to lose their lives because of the atrocities they have been forced to endure at the hands of man. Although American’s have the constitutional right to purchase a pure breed dog, I personally strongly discourage buying dogs from pet stores supplied by puppy mills, backyard breeders, the internet and newspaper ads. I would rather encourage people looking for a new canine companions, to choose adoption first. If you want a pure breed dog there are so many pure breed rescues with dogs waiting for homes.

Another place to adopt a dog is to go to adoption events which some pet stores hold to help rescuers find homes for those that have been rescued.

So as Layla woofs, she is a happy mutt please do not Shop but Adopt and save a dogs’ life.

Be safe everyone and have a wonderful weekend

Layla

  1. Happy belated National Dog Day! I personally support adoption as well as going through a reputable breeder. You are right, puppy mills and back yard breeders are so horrible. No matter where people get their pets, it’s SO important to get the one that is the right fit for you and your lifestyle.

  2. I love the quote and it’s so true. Layla, I hope you enjoyed National Dog Day. You have the best mum to celebrate with. I’m always for adopting and rescuing first! Enjoy your weekend.

  3. I hope you had a great National Dog Day Layla! I, too, am a huge supporter of the world of animal rescue. I have really enjoyed seeing the shift in many pet stores to featuring rescue animals in need of a home instead of selling pets from questionable ‘breeders’ (I use that term loosely because they are definitely not responsible breeders). All three of our dogs are rescues and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

    • Britt you brought up a good point and thank goodness pet stores are starting to help find homes for rescues as the shelters are overflowing. There is no such thing as a reputable breeder and no one will convince me on that one. I adore your rescues

  4. I hope you and Layla had a fun National Dog Day. She’s definitely a great ambassador for adopting. I rescue too! They are amazing animals and so loving. They just need a chance. Thanks for bringing recognition to this special day.

    • Terri my pleasure and we need to speak out, Layla is a really good ambassador for adoptions as she knows what its like to have been
in a shelter and we need to empty them. Thank you for rescuing

  5. Layla is looking beautiful this National Dog Day! I agree that adoption is the way to go with pets. All of my kitties have been adopted. It is horrible when cats and dogs are abused in the name of turning a profit. I think that a lot more people are turning to rescues and shelters as their way of bringing a pet into their home.

    • Robin I am praying more will do it as adopting a pet and giving them a loving home is the most beautiful thing a human can do. Thank you for the compliment of Laylas’ photo, my cute little rescue that she is

  6. I’m so glad that some cities prohibit pet stores from selling puppies. My understanding is that New York state may make it a statewide ban by next year. Fingers crossed that it happens!

  7. Happy national Dog Day Layla. Here it is a lockdown weekend so we are finding a lot of people taking advantage of the weather and going out for a fun walk (not all of them keep their dogs on a lead which is frustrating).

I am so with the idea of no breed bans. It is unfair ti discriminate against one type of dog!

    • Marjorie please be safe and I understand you when it comes to off leash dogs on the sidewalk I also worry about it. I am happy you agree with me when it comes to a no breed ban, it needs to be done

  8. Happy National Dog Day to you as well, Layla! It is a great time to stop & reflect all the homeless pets looking for love & a loving home. That quote is so great, thanks for sharing it.
