Why pets get lost on 4th of July

Spread the love

I have been reading different articles about many things that relate to 4th of July and the one that stands out is the amount of animals that get lost, shelters are already overflowing and will be full after this weekend.

It is so sad that before the weekend even starts, people are dumping pets at Shelters with a million and one reason why they cannot keep them but the bottom line is it is the 4th of July weekend, and they are going away. These people do not even think of the damage they are doing, some lucky pets will be fortunate to get out of there alive, others won’t. I cannot understand why and how people can do that, they are inconsiderate, not compassionate and should not be allowed to have pets again.  This weekend is one of the hardest for Rescue Organizations as they will be overflowing with wonderful warm fuzzy pets looking for new home because of the selfishness of their past owners.

My memory of Layla after been decorated by someone in the park, I love it

Having a pet is in my eyes having a kid, and many people would not dump their kids at a shelter just because the holiday is more tempting, actually I wonder how they are with their kids? If they act this way. Yes, I will judge them as people that have no respect for other species, and only themselves are people I do not want in my life or surroundings.

So let us pray that those unfortunate pets find new happy homes to live out for the rest of their lives, like Layla and Nili.

I also hate fireworks, they are a waste of money that can be used for so much more, rescue organizations are desperate for money and so are many other charities. I also hate them because of the fear they cause to all pets plus the wild animals outside, why should they be traumatized.

How to keep us safe on 4th of July :

Be prepared in the event that your pet does escape – make sure your pet is wearing a collar with an updated tag, microchip is updated and BEST of all just keep your pet inside in a safe place where it cannot escape. You should also walk your dog earlier before the fireworks start so that they have done their business and you do not have to worry again during the night.

How I keep Layla or Nili safe – I give her Relax Supplement from Real Mushrooms which works wonders and normally asleep by 8 pm.  If she does need to go out again during the night she tells me by moaning in my ear.

  1. We sure don’t like those fireworks at all and it will be noisy here the whole week of July 4th. Fireworks are legal here and the redneck will be out in force with them. You sure look cute in your stars and stripes sweet Nili. Thanks for joining Angel Brian’s Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

    • Terry I hate them also and they have been going off every night the past week, what worries me is Nili in the dogpark and being spooked so am taking her earlier every evening. We might not have rednecks here but we do have selfish idiots who only think of themselves. Thank you as always for your Thankful Thursday Blog Hop which I have been so enjoing. Happy 4th of July with a woof from Nili

  2. We so, so agree with you on this. And are reminded of the like-minded humans who think it “cute” (or whatever) to adopt pets at Christmas, or Easter — only to return them soon thereafter. Way too many humans should NEVER be allowed pets (or children for that matter). And yes: on this holiday next week, please if you do have pets, create a safe and quiet and calm environment for them as it will be needed for so many. Thanks, Nili!

    • Anne thank you for reminding me of the past adoptions at Christmas and Easter as we must not forget them also an YES we need to make sure our pets have a calm safe place to hide in the house during those fireworks which I hate. Happy 4th of July with love from Nili

  3. It really is shameful that people treat these loving souls so cruelly. May they get a taste of what they’ve inflicted on their critters at some point and realize they did these beautiful beings wrong. I say the same thing that folks wouldn’t dump their child at a foster home because they were tired of them, or needed a vacation. They wouldn’t trade their unathletic child in for one that appears to be more sporty. It’s just shameful that people can have this mentality.

Thank you again for sharing the calm mushroom treats. Those, along with a heartbeat toy, covered crate, and cooling vest, make all the difference for Henry with fireworks. Maybe I should try the same for myself.

I’m still waiting for communities to decide that drone shows are safer, cooler, and more economical. Maybe someday soon.

    • Terri I agree with all you have said plus so much more, I am also praying they would ban fireworks altogether and do drone shows which are better for the environme3nt also. I worry also about the wild animals that freak out.

I am so happy I introduced you to the mushroom calming chews which work wonders and happy they help Henry also. Cookie for Henry from Nili

      Happy 4th of July

  4. Reading your post, I just had a thought….what if people started organizing a few groups to help catch the pups who will inevitably run away during the fireworks? Like a patrol or something….I don’t know. It always makes me sad to hear the stories of pups that were hit by cars as they run in fear. Not sure if there is a safe way to do it….

    • Tiffany brilliant idea but unfortunately to get people to do it is another story, as it is only the crazy ones outdoors watching them. It saddens me to read the posts about missing pets who have run, the death of them or wild animals, and makes me wonder how cruel humans can be 🙁

  5. Such an important post. I really love that pic of dear Miss Layla. Thanks for sharing it. We were very fortunate that for the most part, my FiveSibes didn’t mind fireworks. I always did stay home with them, and when they were younger, we’d all sit together on my back deck and watch the show over the city in the distance. However, as they grew older, and one, Bandit, began losing her hearing, the booms began to bother her and frighten her. It was so sad to see. So I turned up all the fans, a/c fans, put on white noise and made sure the house was closed up and I’d stay inside with them, especially to be sure Bandit was okay and not scared. She’d run and hide in the far house (my room) and hide in there until it was over. So me and the other Huskies would all join her to keep her company. I’m amazed that people keep shooting them off privately and all hours of the night (past curfews)…when you have pets (or people) who these fireworks affect, I wish they would just switch to an AI-generated light show and skip the booomies. Maybe one day…hope you and Miss Nili had a quiet, peaceful, and safe Fourth.

    • Dorothy the fireworks are like a war zone, I love that photo too, she was such a precious little girl and so easy to dress up. You were an amazing Mom to your angels and I am sure they were relaxed knowing you were home with them blocking out the noise. Awww poor Bandit and I remember how I used to make a bed in the shower for Layla with everything to keep her calm as she was terrified but Nili actually did well phew, I was relieved although I did give her something to calm her down. I also cannot understand how people shoot them off all through the night which I find very disrespectful.I am praying they will one day ban them altogether and cities will use drones instead. I hope you had a peaceful safe holiday with hugs from us
