A day in the life of a rescued dog

Spread the love

TGIF! Weekend has arrived and that means time to kick back, relax and forget all the errands and tasks for two days but spend quality time with Nili.  I need to start doing this the way I did with Layla as it is only fair to her. Yup am having a guilty conscience at this moment LOL. So I decided to share with you what a day with Nili is from early morning till we fall asleep at night and how she keeps me on my toes, plus her training that she is getting, which is helping a lot, thank you Dani.

Nili my growling alarm clock, wakes me up at about 5 every morning and does not keep quiet till I am awake and searching for clothes plus to get her out. This for her is the best time of the day as I am sleepy and she is a bundle of energy but off we go. I normally walk her for about 3 blocks for her to potty, sniff and of course burn off energy. Once done and I by then am desperate for coffee, we come home. I normally let her run into the building to burn off more energy, but she will make a bee line for the front door, sitting with a wagging tail waiting for me.

I then take her harness off and feed her breakfast which is air dried kibbles, carrots, blueberries, apples and some coconut oil. She gobbles her breakfast down and then starts squeaking toys or takes a nap. While I drink my coffee finally LOL, she will sit at my feet growling and barking for attention and of course treats but have cut back with them because of her diet.

Breakfast time

While I work during the morning she will let me know if she needs to go out which of course we do and then once she is settled, I get back to whatever I am doing. I normally give her YOMP toy or Kong with veggies in plus a bit of salmon which keeps her busy for about a half hour. Then it is nap time for her. If we have been out longer than planned and it is hot I will give her some chopped up watermelon, carrots, blueberries and apples instead.

Yomp time yummmm

In the late afternoons around 4 or so I take her to the park to run and play while I sit back and watch her with my  coffee. She loves that time especially if all the treat people are out although most know she cannot have treats because of her diet.  I am battling to keep her on her diet plus now buying everything for her to munch on that is not more than one calorie which is not easy. If it’s a biscuit she gets a quarter. She is not starving but I do not want her to be obese and the 2 lbs she needs to lose. When we get home from the park in the evenings she gets her dinner, which is the same as breakfast and then the kitchen is closed for her.

Nili and Monkey, I just love this photo

Our last walk at night is around 9 pm when we walk about 4 blocks, she has time to potty, smell and check the p-mails. The other night while walking we came across a racoon which was as big as her, she barked like crazy while he looked at her as if to say what do you want. She thought she was so smart walking home tail wagging it was quite funny.

I then brush her out, make sure there are no matts, clean her teeth and she gets half a greenie and it is bedtime. Nili sleeps in different places each night but am relieved she settles down and goes to sleep.

So that is what our days are like, of course we do different things on weekends, but she gets lots of exercise, playtime in the park, and most of all she is not starving and goes to bed with a full tummy.

Rescuing a stray, is not easy in some ways, but I would not change it for anything, she keeps me on my toes and for a senior that is enough LOL.

Have a wonderful weekend, be safe

With a woof and hugs from Nili

    • Andrea I am learning to survive the 5 am wake up and there are days that by midday I am a zombie LOL. I cannot walk her and take my coffee with as I am worried it will spill along the way but that is a great idea.

      • Oh! I have the solution for you! My husband got me a cup called a “Yeti” which the paperwork brags is an over-engineered cup. It keeps your coffee hot a long time, doesn’t spill if you tip it, and can be machine washed.

I don’t yet know if you can drop it without it spilling everywhere, but I may go experiment with cooled coffee outside and report back to you. It’s made of metal and won’t shatter if it’s dropped, so it would be safe to do so.

        • Wow I have never heard of it and going to check it out, I have a one cup coffee machine which came with a mug that keeps the coffee warm but the lid does not prevent from spilling so I do not carry it around. Thanks so much that information, have a great weekend

  1. Nothing like a rescue! Nili seems to be doing really well with the training, you can see how much she’s improved just going out the front door. Glad to see how much the trainer is helping you both. It’s not only her weekends that are packed, it’s daily life as well. Jack used to get an upset stomach from people that wanted to feed him treats, and no matter how many times I asked them to there were still always some that refused to listen. We had to stop going to this one hangout because of it.

    • Hindy she is doing so much better but there is still a lot to work on, Dani is fantastic with her and its now for both of us to do the things together so that I understand it all. I agree with you the treat story in parks is out of control and I am telling all to stop giving her all the time. I try to keep her day packed as much as I can as it is good for both of us plus it tires her out LOL as she is a puppy and full of energy. You were fantastic with Jack and he was so fortunate to have you as his Mom.

    • Thank you and I am partially retired but cannot live without a dog so I hope you will get one soon too, this daily routine is good for me also as it gets me out of the house.

  2. I love the photo of Nili and Monkey as well. It looks like Dani is doing a great job with Nili. I need to get back to training daily with Henry. He loves it. He may love the cookies even more. This is a super cute and very informative article for people who don’t know what it takes to be a dog parent. Great insights! I’m sharing with all my dog parents.

    • Terri I love the photo of Monkey and Nili also, it is one of my best. Dani is doing a great job and Nili is really learning but like Henry I think she loves the treats more LOL. their tummies come first. It is so important for pet parents to understand the life we have with our dogs and that it is all not fun and games only. Thanks for sharing and have a great week, Nili woofs cookie for Henry

    • Dorothy thank you, I am really working hard with her and she is getting better every day with her training, Dani is just fantastic with her. The howling makes me laugh so much and I always think of you when the Huskies join in, quite q choir LOL. Have a wonderful week
