Living with a younger dog

Spread the love

Woof Everyone, the weekend has arrived, and I am so looking forward to it. I need to charge my batteries as Nili is keeping me on my toes all the time LOL.

After living with a senior dog for more than 3 years (Layla was with me for over 14 years) and now adopting a young pup I am learning a lot and realizing sometimes how Layla spoiled me with her calm personality when she was younger. One of the big differences I have learned is that Layla was dumped in a shelter whereas Nili was a stray and there is a big difference there. They both were the same age when I got them but personality wise very different. Nili is a wild child.

I am learning daily from this and have no regrets as I adore Nili but she is a work in process till we get her trained properly so life will be easier for both of us, and I will be then able to take her on proper adventures.  She is learning fast but there are things that need to be corrected and since her being spayed last week I have put all on hold so that I could focus on her healing with no complications. One of the things the vet made me understand was that she was not to jump on anything and have short walks which was difficult as she is a bundle of energy and unfortunately not burning it all off as she is not allowed to play with toys either. To help with this I decided to sleep on the floor next to her so she would not jump on the bed, it has not been easy for me, and I have not slept properly plus Nili thinks it’s a game and she is wanting cuddles and playtime with me when I am trying to sleep. So, I am functioning on lack of sleep at this moment and slowly collapsing from exhaustion. She is on a sedative to keep her calm, but it is not working as well as I was hoping LOL. Her wound thank goodness is healing well, and hopefully tomorrow, Friday the cone will come off and life will get back to sort of normal. I am giving her CBD oil at night to really get her calm and sleepy and we finally have got to her sleeping till about 6 in the morning but when she is awake that’s it, she is wanting to go out. That is one of the main issues I have with her as she runs out on her leash barking at the world which needs to stop. She has realized that I have treats in my pocket so in the middle of a walk she will sit down and not move till she gets a treat, who is the boss in the family HA.

Moping with her cone on

I have my harness and leash on can we go out please, Nili

She has finally starting to sleep in the bed and loves it

We are meeting with a dog trainer on Monday which hopefully will help me solve all the problems although I know Rome was not built in one day, but praying things will fall into place soon.

On Saturday Gidget is coming to spend the weekend with us, two days only, which is going to be interesting to see how Nili reacts, this was something I had arranged with Gidget’s Mom months ago so chaos will be in the house for two days, but they are so similar in personality it is going to be fun plus good for Nili to have someone to play with. My house I know is going to be a total disaster.

Another thing I have to keep reminding myself is that Layla was a picky eater where as Nili eats anything she can get her mouth on so I am now realizing that shopping for her is actually quite easy and I am relieved. She loves her squeaky toys, bully sticks keep her busy so we are getting there with that. One thing she hates is having her teeth cleaned and hides at the front door every night when I put the teeth gel in her mouth but will not give in as her teeth are perfect at this moment and I want to keep them that way.

We must not forget that August is clear the shelters month, and watching what is going on in this country is breaking my heart daily, and we must spread the word and push for the banning of Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders plus get all pet stores to stop selling puppies, hopefully that way it will help the problem.

I am open to all ideas for training Nili if you have any,

Have a peaceful fun weekend and don’t forget to hug your pets, I am off to bed,

Her favorite sleeping position BOL

With a woof and love

From Nili and Me

  1. Nili is such a cutie and I have no doubt you will figure out the training part. If she’s treat motivated you have the advantage. I’m glad she is healed up from her spay surgery. Thanks for joining Angel Brian’s Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

    • Hi Brian, thank you so much for your Thankful Thursday Blog Hop as always, I always reading about your cats. Nili is a cutie, I am very blessed and with guidance from the trainer this morning I think we are on our way to getting it all sorted out. Her being spayed is going to make life easier also. Have a wonderful week

  2. So glad to hear things are going well with Nili, and I give you credit for taking on a high energy young pup. Remember, she’ll keep you young! I’m sure you’re looking forward to getting back to your adventures, and Nili will love all of it!

  3. Hi little Nili ~ it’s so hard to be an energetic, get-into-everything young silly little puppy lady! But it’s also fun to learn new things, so we hope all goes well in the days ahead (and for your Mommy, too!) Oh, and that you heal quickly from that girly-thing you had, ouchie.
By the way, we want to remind you and your Mommy that you will be the FEATURE on our
blog, Zoolatry, next Tuesday, August 20 … so see you then!

    • Hi Hi and thank you so so much for that honor, we cannot wait also. I am doing fine and back to normal phew, no more ouchies, now its time to drive Mom nuts BOL. See you on Tuesday August the 2th and we love the graphics, your artwork is amazing xxx

  4. Oh my goodness! She is a bottle of energy. Layla must’ve thought you needed a boost of energy in your life. I think everything you’ve done with her is absolutely perfect. Sleeping on the floor would be rough (or ruff) for me too. That is a great idea to take her to a trainer for help. I imagine she’s super smart, which is both good and bad. Have you tried frozen kong toys to keep her entertained? I know some pet parents will hide a few frozen kongs and their pup will be happy with that for a few hours. But, as you know, then you have to count the kong treat as part of her meal or she’ll start packing on pounds. Have the Real Mushroom calm treats worked at all? If not, maybe message their vets for more ideas. They are very good at answering questions. Thank you again, for directing me to those treats for Henry. You know, Gidget may wear out Nili and it’ll be a calm (or relatively speaking) visit. That’s my hope at least. Try to get some rest. I know the trainer will help tons! Sending hugs and pets yours and Nili’s way.

    • Hi Terri, she is a smarty pants and keeping me on my toes BOL. I have been giving her the mushroom supplement which is working wonders and I am so happy they helping Henry also. I discussed the Kong with the trainer today and am thinking about getting one for her although she loves her squeaky toys which are keeping her really busy plus all the walks. Sending a big hug to Henry from us xxx

  5. I am so glad you are getting to know each other. She sounds a bundle of energy but I know she will settle down when she doesn’t feel she needs to ‘please’ you all the time. Mili will relax into her new home and, with the help of the trainer person, I know she will do wonderfully well. .

    • Marjorie I so agree with you and she seems to be setting more and more on a daily basis, Time and patience and the puzzle will fall into place. The trainer gave me some wonderful tips today which really excited me.

  6. I had a similar experience when I lost my elderly guy in 2020 – then got a puppy. Big difference (and it’s hard not to compare the two dogs). What I learned is I need to get up and go more. Since getting my 8 week old pup three and half years ago, I’ve had no choice.

    • Sherri it is true I must not compare but focus on the presence and by doing so actually things are falling into place. Nili is a smart little girl and catching on quickly which I am very lucky with, Each day is a new day and a new adventure so I understand you fully

  7. What a cutie you are, Nili! We saw you at Miss Ann’s and Juney’s and had to come and visit. We know all about the puppy energy and eating anything that looks tasty as I am a 6 month old puppy that needs lots more training too!

    • Hi Duke, I like your name. Thank you so much for visiting us today and Mom thinks the puppy energy is cute but hates taking the gross stuff out of my mouth BOL. I told Mom if training means treats I will go for it so we are, have a wonderful week

    • Thanks MK, I am loving the wild times but am exhausted also LOL, she keeps me on my toes non stop LOL. I am very blessed to have her in my life and she is now safe off the streets which relaxes me xxx

  8. Sorry, I don’t have any training ideas I always joke that Fenris trained himself although we did go to dog obedience school when he was little. And Lady thank goodness seems to follow Fenris’ lead most of the time. I do need to manage to teach the two that I am not a resource to guard. ~Sandra

Nice to meet your Nili, ~Fenris, Lady & The Cats

    • Sandra, training and obedience school is very similar although I feel it trains us parents to be the ATM for their treats to get them to behave. Layd is lucky to have a role model in Fenris as it does make it easier in the long run. Great meeting you and hope to see you again, Nili

  9. Dearest Ruth,
Sorry to read that you lost Layla, whom you had for over 14 years and that she was a dumped puppy of about 3 years when you got her, makes her exceptionally lucky for reaching a life span of 17 years!
My Mauzie girl the miniature Dachshund was only 12.5 when she left us.
But Nili, having been a stray, is fortunate for having found her forever home!
    Hugs,
    Mariette + Kitties

    • I am so so sorry about Mauzie, she was a lucky girl to have you as her Mom. Nili is fortunate but so am I as she is keeping me busy, big hugs from us xxx

  10. Hi Nili from a cat in trout towne I saw you featured at zoolatry
today and wanted to say Hi. hope you have a biscuit filled great
week . mackerull boomer junior butter feeld

  11. Oh, sweet Nili! I am so glad your wound is healing and you are settling in nicely into your wonderful new home!

Ah, a young pup…I do remember those days! Fun, but also exciting and yes, definitely a time for a messier house, thanks to them! But, it will pass. Being she is so young, lots of adventures, and walks, and even some treat puzzle games will all help a lot! We used a clicker for training with lots of treats!

I know it must be very different going from a senior dog with special needs to a young gal! But you’re amazing and I know you two will be a fantastic team enjoying many adventures! Pinning your story to share with others! xo

    • Dorothy I never thought about a clicker, will check into it, treats are working but she needs lots of practise and every day is a new day. It is very different from being with a senior but would not change it for anything in this world.

      Have a wonderful weekend
      Nili
