How to protect your dog with Supplements from Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRDC)

TGIF! Good morning, everyone,

Winter has arrived and with it all the colds, flu and so much more. We are all aware of the new CANINE INFECTIOUS RESPIRATORY Virus that is going around and we have all become alert and aware of everywhere our dogs go. I have been following it everywhere and as a Mom to a senior it got me more concerned as Layla loves being outdoors and when in parks roam around so decided to do some real research.

One of the wake up calls for me was the email I received from my vet clinic, The San Francisco Animal Medical Centre where we went last week as they invited all their clients to the opening of a new section, An Oncology Department and MRI, and they will be adding more in the near future. I am really excited to have everything under one roof and knowing the staff and vets makes it a lot easier. Layla’s vet was there, and she thanked me for the mention in my Thanksgiving post and loved that I shared my list of supplements that I give Layla and complemented me that I am a wonderful Dog Mom, which made me feel good.

I got permission from Dr. Judy Morgan to share here  from her blog:

What foods strengthen the immune system?

  • Blueberries nourish Blood and Yin, clear heat, have antioxidant properties, and play an essential role in the respiratory tract’s immune defense system.
  • Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is a Chi (energy) tonic and resolves stagnation.
  • Oily fish like sardines are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, have anti-inflammatory properties, and are a Blood and Chi tonic.
  • Broccoli is rich in vitamins, has antioxidant properties, tonifies Blood, and clears heat. Serve steamed or grind into small pieces and serve raw.
  • Sweet potato reinforces the spleen and stomach, has antioxidant properties, and is rich in beta carotene and vitamin A.
  • Spinach is rich in vitamins C and E, flavonoids, carotenoids, and is a Blood tonic.
  • Ginger contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, warms the lungs and arrests cough. Ginger is a warm herb; if a high fever is present, use peppermint or spearmint.
  • Garlic breaks down phlegm, reinforces the stomach, and aids digestion. Like ginger, garlic has warming properties and is not recommended if fever is present.
  • Red bell pepper is a rich source of vitamin C and promotes circulation.
  • Ground almonds transform phlegm and moisten the lungs.

What supplements strengthen the immune system?

Turkey Tail Mushrooms boost immune cell production, combat infections, and alleviate inflammation.

Vitamin C, an antioxidant, helps maintain healthy immune system function and is also good for arthritis.

Colostrum supplies immunoglobulins (antibodies) and cytokines which are important components of the immune system.

Probiotics support the immune function and gut health.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is important to test current levels of Vitamin D in the body as too much is toxic. Be sure to test levels before administering. On the other hand, low Vitamin D leaves the immune system compromised. Foods such as egg yolks and oily fish (sardines) can be given in place of Vitamin D without the risk of toxicity.

Fresh or Freeze-Dried Lung like treats like and lung can be a great food or treat to support respiratory function.

Another very interesting resource is the Q&A today by Dr Rob Silver from Real Mushrooms ad Joni Kamlet.  They answered a lot of questions and I found it very interesting plus I got from them all the answers I needed to keep Layla healthy and safe. One of the products that stood out for me is 5 Defenders which has all the mushrooms needed to keep her immune system healthy plus they mentioned a new product that would be on the market soon which is a daily mushroom supplement called Daily Dawg.

I am running like crazy

TGIF!!!  The weekend has arrived, so many of you are complaining about the heat and here in San Francisco it is cool, overcast and gloomy. We need some sun.

I have been researching supplements for Layla to keep her muscles and joints in as best condition as possible with her aging, as she loves to walk but noticed.

That she would sit down in the middle of a walk and although she has the stroller, she needs exercise also. With my research I came across this company

Myos which have a fantastic muscle formula with green lipped mussels and decided to give it a try. What a difference since she is getting it. The plus is it is powder form so easy to put in her food and she does not know she is eating it, LOL.

The supplement she is getting is the Myos Muscle Formula with Green Lipped Mussels:

Fortetropin® Plus Green Lipped Mussel Powder

  • IMPROVED STRENGTH: Fortetropin provides nutrients from a patented process using fertilized egg yolks and is a powerful muscle building supplement perfect for improving leg strength and reducing pain and inflammation in dogs with muscle loss from aging, injury or surgery.
  • INCREASED MOBILITY: Green Lipped Mussel supports joint health, movement and flexibility, offering natural anti-inflammatory properties that helps rebuild lost cartilage and tendons, reducing associated joint pain.
  • ALL-NATURAL SENIOR SUPPORT: Containing just 2 natural ingredients, our canine muscle and joint health supplement helps to reduce muscle loss and boost daily movement and activity in older dogs.

We went to the dog park the other day and she was running in the park, something she has not done in months, I was chasing after her as her being blind  I was

afraid she would bump into a big dog or the poles around the park but if she had her own way she would have been going nonstop. I was totally amazed and happy to see her move that way, tail wagging and all happy.  See the video I have put here.

https://youtube.com/shorts/MKLNoQmRtjg?feature=share

As our pups age, we are always looking for a supplement plus good food to keep them comfortable, happy, and healthy and this is one I strongly suggest you look into for your pups as their mobility is so important. I am so pleased I have started adding it to her food as she is one energizer bunny again, keeping me on my toes but I would not change it for anything in this world.

I was sponsored by Myos and thank them so much from the bottom of my heart.

Now we must remind everyone that July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month, We must make sure our pets have enough clean water to drink all the time, if we are out on an adventure we have enough water for them as we do not want out pet to get dehydration because of lack of water.

Stay safe everyone, have a wonderful weekend,

With a woof and love from Layla

12 Year Journey with Layla

TGIF!!! It is the end of the week, the sun has been shining so we have managed to have some dog park time, fun and of course lots of chicken LOL.

It is Layla’s Gotcha Day on the 31st, she has been with me for 12 years and I still say it was the best online love affair in the world.

Where and how did it begin ? After Baby passed I waited about 3 months and then started searching on PetFinder and PetHarbor for a new munchkin to share my life with me. I had a friend who was in LA at the time working, so he told me to look in the shelters there for a fluffy butt that I wanted, if I saw one his friend who is a rescuer would go and get her and he would bring her to me in SF.  So after 3 days of searching I saw her sitting in a cage in the Carson Shelter, her face said it all although she was a matted mess, I told Cindy that was the ONE, Cindy went on the Saturday to get her, called me to say she was on her lap licking her and that said it all, Cindy took her home and the following day Michael brought her to me and the rest is history.

We have gone through a lot together it has been a wonderful blessed journey and now my goal as she ages is to keep her as happy and healthy as possible which in a way seems to be working.

She gets home cooked food and I have now added some new supplements to her food which seem to helping a lot plus she is sleeping better at night which is fantastic.  Thanks to Dr Harvey’s amazing products she is on his :

  • Kidney Health : A herbal and mushroom supplement designed to help support your dog’s kidneys.
  • Contains Rehmannia Root, Organic Reishi, Organic Shiitake, Organic Poria and Organic Cordyceps (all edible fungi), Organic Astragalus Root which provide overall kidney support and health by tonifying the kidneys.
  • Contains Codonopsis, a herb that works to boost the immune system of the whole body as well as the kidneys. Codonopsis also supports urinary health.

Since she is on this she is not wanting to go out every hour to pee, sleeping better through the night as she does not need to pee as much and in a nutshell I have seen a big difference.

Since getting this in her food she seems to be more awake, full of energy and back to being bossy barker which is my favorite nickname for her LOL.

Golden Years : A proprietary Blend of Alfalfa, Kelp, Flaxseed, Brewer’s Yeast, Lecithin Granules, Spirulina, Garlic, Rose Hips, Fo-Ti Root, Bilberry Leaf, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf, Ginger Root, Licorice Root, Nettle Leaf, Rosemary Leaf, Burdock Root, Red Clover, Suma, Yellowdock Root, Calendula………………………..2.6 grams

Like most dogs, Layla sometimes gets an upset tummy and the probiotics she was getting were not working so I got from Dr Harvey’s his Runs Be Done which is fantastic and I love that it is Natural with no chemicals. It contains : Dr. Harvey’s Runs Be Done is a digestive supplement for your dog. Ingredients : Pumpkin, Bentonite Clay, Slippery Elm Bark, Apple Pectin, Plantain, Marshmallow Root, Fennel Seed, Banana, Ginger Root, Chamomile.

She of course gets Dr Harvey’s Raw Vibrance which gives her all the nutrients she needs I feel she is getting the best of the best food and supplements, there are others she gets, but the plus is all supplements are in powder form so easy to give to her as I mix them all in her food so she does not know she is getting them.

If you want to learn more about his products you can find them on his website : https://www.drharveys.com/

You have a 10% coupon when shopping on his site : Layla10

We were sponsored by Dr Harvey’s for this blog.

So our journey plods along, we growing older together, I am so blessed to have her by my side every day, barking orders, sometimes not sleeping through the night, but would not change it for anything.

To celebrate her Gotcha Day next week I am doing a surprise for her on Sunday and am keeping it that way till you read all about it next week where we will also share our favorite photos of her, I am really excited and curious also.

This is Layla’s weekly woof this week, exciting and happy as always, she is at the moment napping and I  have the Jazz on so the music keeps our house calm.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, be safe

With a woof and love from Layla

Are Mushrooms Magic?

TGIF !! Another week over and the weekend is starting. I cannot believe how fast this year is going it is scary in a way or maybe I am just aging LOL.

Last Friday we had a picnic in the park with one of my closest friends, it was the first time Layla was in the park in months as she has become afraid of them, but she surprised me and was totally relaxed, wandered around a bit, and then went to sleep. It was relaxing for me to see her that way and not worry so have decided that am going to try it again today for a couple of hours. I think it was because the park was not full.

As you all know Layla is aging, it worries me big time and having lost her sight has made walking hard as I am so scared of her bumping her head, so I got her a halo which is arriving today. I am praying it will make outings less stressful for me as she will be able to walk on a longer leash and I will not have to keep pulling her in before she hurts herself. I think the pulling on the harness is hurting her back poor baby.

I have also been doing research on mushroom supplements for her and now am trying one on her.  She seems to be more energetic with it which is fantastic. What it is a capsule with 5 different mushrooms in.

A breakdown of the mushrooms and benefits below :

Chaga Mushrooms

Some of the earliest uses of chaga mushrooms were for ulcers, stomach pain, and inflammatory bowel disease. It’s believed that the immune-stimulating traits of chaga help balance the gut bacteria and ease ulcers and gastritis. Chaga mushrooms can help regulate blood sugar levels for animals with diabetes

I approached an Organic Mushroom Company – RealMushrooms.com to get a bottle for a review as they have one capsule with all 5 in and I can open the capsule and mix in her food.

I am giving her their 5 Defenders Organic Mushroom Blend Capsules for Pets.

Their customer service has been fantastic, they have answered all my questions and I would recommend them to any other dog blogger who is interested.

I have not changed Layla’s diet or other supplements but adding the mushrooms have given me peace of mind that I am controlling her body health wise inside and out.

If you are interested in learning more about them this is their website :
