Helping those that do not have voices

Woof to all my fur friends,

We are woofing this Wednesday because of many reasons but the main one is because of Easter and Passover this weekend.

Last weekend we had fun as usual BOL and on Sunday Mom took me with her to my favorite restaurant Palmyra which is a Syrian place that makes yummy food especially the chicken. That was my payment for modelling for her with the bunny ears which I did not like on my head, but for Mom I have to do things sometimes whether I like it or not.

We also met with my favorite Aunt Barbara, so it was double fun and of course Mom gave me some of her chicken and I put my head on Aunt Barbara’s lap so it was really a fun afternoon. We came home and I just went to bed to sleep while Mom did housework.

Now as we all know holidays are upon us, Easter for the Christians and Passover for the Jews. It is a special time when families get together and eat themselves sick, that is what Mom told me. She only gives me a little to taste but it is the best as that means I get yummy food and not my food, BOL.

So today as we are talking about the Middle East as both Holidays originate there, we are also going to talk about a wonderful woman who is battling and doing her utmost to save all the stray dogs in Bethlehem. She rescues the strays and then they go to a rescue organization in Israel which helps to find the stray dogs homes.

You can read about her in the link below.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/palestinian-ex-banker-devotes-her-life-to-west-bank-dogs/?fbclid=IwAR1LsQztdXvw2CbRmftDMbOh4uYmGWKpg5SMa0AOIdIuDQa5kG5104vV_B8

http://basau.org/

The reason we talking about her and the wonderful work she does, is at the moment and it being holidays where our food is plentiful, she is struggling to feed all the stray dogs and reaching out to everyone for help. So I, Layla as a rescue, thought if we each helped with like 5 dollars, it would all add up, and the dogs would have food to eat, that is what we call a Mitzvah which means a good deed done from religious duty. So who is going to step in and help.

I am attaching all the links here, from the Facebook pages, paypal links and go fund me links and we hope everyone will help and share the story.

I heard about her plight through a friend of mine who volunteers in the shelter that is working with her and reached out to me to share the story.

Now that we have shared with the plea, everyone please have a wonderful Easter or Passover, and make sure your pets are all safe from the hazards of these holidays.

Thank you for reading the story about this amazing woman, Diana, sharing and helping

Friday has arrived

April 11, 2019

Morning Fur Friends,

Friday has arrived and that means the fun time and adventures start as there is no rain this weekend, phew.

Thursday, April 11th is National Pet Day which is a very important day. It was started by Colleen Paige to celebrate the joy and love that pets bring into our lives and most important highlight the awareness of the many different animals sitting in shelters all over the world waiting to find forever homes.

This is the reason I will only rescue and not pay a breeder as there are so many in cages begging to go home people should rescue. There are also pure breeds in shelters and rescues for those that want one, opening your door to a rescue of any kind of animal is saving a life, actually not one but two, yours and the rescue.

No animal should have to suffer, especially at the hand of humans and that is why Adopt don’t Shop is so important.

To celebrate this day we can do the following :

Layla is a rescue and like many I am sure when we read the list above we say well we do some of those every day so why not instead do the others also.

I for example try to give back wherever possible, helping rescues is on the top of my list and love sharing with them.

One of the most important things in my life as a Mom to a rescue is to make sure that on weekends I do very little work and spend quality time with Layla giving her extra special love and attention as she is so patient during the week when I am at work.

Last weekend I decided as the weather was so good to take advantage of it and on Sunday we did two dog parks. One in the morning which I call my little paradise as it is a tiny park not far from me, really quiet but has lots of smells, so what can be better than walking there with a cup of coffee, a happy trotting little dog, bag of treats of course, finding a bench and just chilling. Best way to start the day.

At lunchtime we went with a friend to the Chihuahua Meet Up, Layla always is the honorary Chi LOL.  I love where they hold it, Stern Grove is amazing and at the end of the park is a fantastic lake, so it is soothing, relaxing and just great being out in nature. Layla loves the smells, wandering around and of course getting some treats, but for me it is quality time, no electronics, just the two of us.

So now that summer is arriving, I am researching new places of adventure for the two of us on weekends, plus of course all the dog events that will be happening in the city, so that our weekends will be filled with fun.

Did you do something special for your pet on National Pet Day ?

Layla is now going to have her morning nap after a long walk and I am catching up on my work,

Have a wonderful weekend everyone With a woof and Love from
Layla

National Pet First Aid Awareness Month.

Layla drinking from her water bottle in the park

TGIF !!!!!!!!!!

April has arrived and with it many National Pet Holidays and Observances and I am going to focus on one in this blog which I think is just as important as the others but the main reason I am focusing on this one is that Spring has arrived, summer is around the corner and that means we are outdoors more, hiking, camping plus many more adventures.

When we pack for those adventures one of the important items that some of us forget about is the First Aid Kit for our Pet, we remember for us and remember many items for the pet but this is one that we forget. It happens cos we are humans LOL.

What should a First Aid Kit have, we can either build our own or buy one that is prepared already, I personally have put my own together as it was easier plus it is easier for me to keep an eye on the expiry dates and some of the over the counter ones come with food, etc which I do not need.
What is in my kit :

I also have in my kit some Topical Relief – 4Paws Pet Balm by Restorative Botanicals. which works wonders on bites, as it relieves the itchiness plus if she licks it it has Hemp Oil in which calms her down. See link below for the product.

https://www.restorativebotanicals.com/?rfsn=2263342.782237

I have made sure our first aid kit is not that heavy so that it makes it easy for me to take when I am out for the day on an adventure with Layla.

This kit with of course other items I keep in my earthquake emergency bag and take out when needed so it makes my life easier and I am more relaxed.

I also keep with my kit the book : Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide which is my Bible for everything.

I do admit I am a Jewish Mom so am always worried about Layla when we go to different dog parks or other outdoor activities and that is the reason LOL that I am reminding all of us.

Do you have a first aid kit for your pet ? What do you have in yours ?

We are so looking forward to the summer, spending time outdoors and having fun which is so needed after all the rains.

Have a great weekend everyone

With a woof and love from Layla

Old Lady Quirks

TGIF !!! Let the weekend begin and we hope there will be a bit of sunshine because the two old ladies of the Layla Neighborhood, Mom and Layla need some warming up.

And now we are sure why we called this blog Old Lady Quirks, it is because we are getting older and with age comes the new quirks, and bless Layla the list is growing. My vet laughed when I told her and all she said that is the aging process and I must get used to it. So as I do giggle over some of them I though we all need laughter in our lives so lets share and make a blog of them.

Layla is turning 12 this year and with it I have noticed :

01. She is afraid of the sound from the microwave and we live in a studio so now when I use it she hides in the bathroom, so there is a bed in the shower for her now.

02. She loves to sleep late in the mornings which is fine with me but once we are out she can walk the whole of San Francisco if she can, and will sit and be stubborn if she does not get her way. So we do a lot of zig zagging as she wants her way or it is no way, giving me a miserable look at the same time.

03. The dog park she is suddenly not comfortable going to as she does not like the clapping that some of the dog owners do although we are sitting away from them, this I am really working on as summer is around the corner.

04. In the evenings when I take her for her last walk at about 6 – 7, she loves walking around the supermarket parking lot, lots of smells LOL and we can do this like 6 times and then will walk past the entrance to go home, Madam trotting away all happy, me exhausted and hungry.

05. Thank goodness no food quirks phew as the above is keeping me busy as it it.

As you can see with age comes quirks, and some quirks means adapting your life to the old Lady’s needs which is becoming interesting on a daily basis.

So on this quirky note, we hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, with a woof and love from Layla.

Park time is starting

Let the park fun begin

Spring has arrived and the sun is shining although they say there is going to be more rain grrrrrrrrrrrrr.  It has been awesome though being able to walk Layla her long walks in the mornings which she loves.

So as you always see Layla sitting or sleeping LOL I decided to share with you a video of her walking – or as I call it on a mission as once she gets started she just goes LOL and I feel we walk San Francisco.

https://www.facebook.com/LaylasWoof/videos/396474930939849/

Last weekend we spent most of the time in the park, the weather was wonderfully warm and it was just great to sit on a blanket and relax with coffee of course, Madam and her treats and the best of all no electronics. I love those kind of days when I people / dog watch and do nothing.

I have also found that since she is on her new supplements from Raw Paws Pet Food her energy level has doubled and it is great, she is also not itching when coming in from the park which I think is the best news of all and I hope it just carries on this way.

Don’t forget that you can get a 15% discount if you shop on line for their products with the code : Layla15

On Tuesday she got a bath, or as she calls it punishment but her favorite of course is getting all the free treats at the Pet Store where the bathing is done. So she is smelling of coconut at the moment which is better than the smelly park smells from rolling in the grass.

I am at the moment looking into what dog events are happening this year in the Bay Area which is my favorite also, Layla gets to taste all the treats and I get to check all out and of course carry her in her back pack. The first one I know is happening in April around the corner from us, one of my favorites.

So that is what is happening in the Layla Neighborhood at the moment.

Have a wonderful weekend

With a woof and love from Layla

Spring is in the Air

TGIF !!!!!  Woof Happy Friday all my fur friends and I hope you are all looking forward to the weekend the way we are.

We have had a busy week but also celebrating that the sun is shining and with the Daylight Savings we are now able to get to the park when I finish work. WOW what a concept, to feel the warm sun on your face after all the cold rainy weather. Not sure how long it will last but we are enjoying it immensely.

On Tuesday I took Layla for her annual check up. Growing old means being more careful, keeping double eyes on all and in a nutshell making sure she is getting all the correct nutrients in her food which I as a Jewish Mother is always worried about. They had done blood work on her a month ago as she had lost 1.5 lbs and I was really concerned BUT the happy news is she is back to her normal 15 lbs and nothing to worry about, she got a clean bill of health. I am so relieved over this as I know now I must be doing something right.

I spoke to the vet about her not wanting to go out after 7 in the evening and the vet told me not to worry, because of her one eye going blind she might be afraid of the dark so just to let her do what she wants and if she needs to go out she will tell me, which is what she normally does.

Now as you all know I cook for Layla, and one of my biggest worries is that her food is not properly balanced so I am always doing research, checking and have come across the most amazing supplements which even my vet said she can see the difference in her since I have been giving them. Plus they are made in the USA which is the most important of all.

What are they :

01. Raw Paws Hip and Joint Support for Dogs and Cats : Organic hip and joint supplement is beneficial for all pet life stages from puppies and kittens up to seniors! This joint supplement is a healthy blend of green lipped mussel powder, ginger, turmeric curcumin, pumpkin and ceylon cinnamon. Giving this daily supplement offers natural arthritis relief without the nasty side effects from pet arthritis medicine!

02.  Raw Paws Mineral Rich Organic Sea Kelp Daily Supplement for Dogs and Cats : This excellent natural source of iodine supports glandular functioning such as thyroid health and metabolism. With an improved metabolism, the overall health of your pets will improve by an increase in energy and decrease in inflammation and infection. Sea Kelp promotes oral health by reducing buildup of plaque and tartar for healthy teeth. Being the #1 source of natural trace minerals, sea kelp helps to strengthen the immune system, promotes a healthy skin and coat, reduces itching and fortifies the blood for an overall healthy, vibrant life! Sea Kelp also has 60 different vitamins, minerals, and trace elements as well as 21 amino acids. Made with zero artificial ingredients.

And I think the most important for our pampered pets are the TREATS which Layla is addicted to now. They sent me :

01. Chicken Jerky for dogs only  02. Freeze Dried Green Tripe which is for both Dogs and Cats 03. Freeze Dried Duck which is for both Dogs and Cats .

Layla is at this moment in Treat Heaven, every time she hears a bag she thinks its treats.

Poison Prevention Awareness Month.

March has arrived and the rains are still here. When will they stop. The good news is that California is out of drought the last I read but the grounds are so soaked that they are not absorbing the rains anymore. One muddy mess in the dog park LOL which Madam does not like.

March is also an important month as it is Poison Prevention Awareness Month.

Please keep us safe !

This is so important and it reminds us how important it is to keep our pets safe from anything toxic which leads to illness and sometimes death. So Layla decided that this week our blog is going to focus on this subject to make sure that all our fur friends are safe both in the house and outside. The way we child proof a house and garden, we should pet proof the same way.

01. Plants can be poisonous especially azalea, oleander, castor bean, sago palm, Easter lily or yew plant material eaten by an animal can be fatal.

02.. Cleaning products – those are dangerous and should not be lying around in the house. Please store them in a place that your pets have no access to. I personally only use Apple Cider Vinegar in the house for cleaning, etc as that way I know if Layla walks on the wet floor she is safe.

03. Medications – never give your pets medications unless directed by a Vet. Keep all medications locked away so they cannot find them.

04. Chocolate is a BIG NO.

05.  Household products like coffee grinds, play dough, fabric softener sheets and more are all toxic to your pets.

06. Automotive products – please do not leave them lying around the garage and if something spills make sure to clean up.

07. Flea Meds – all pets have different reactions to these so please check with your vet before you administer them to your pets.

08. Always read all instructions / cautions of any product before using it in your house, garden or on your pet.

09. Keep your pets inside or away from any insecticides  Also keep your pets away from fertilizers on the grass or in the garden. All of them can be toxic. Plus make sure you store these products in a place that is inaccessible to your pets.

10. Do not use products for dogs on cats and vice versa unless it says you can.

11. If you are uncertain about the proper usage of any product, contact the manufacturer and/or your veterinarian for instructions.ASPCA National Animal Poison Control CenterSuite 361717 Philo RoadUrbana, IL 61801

Phone : (888) 4-ANI-HELP

I am aware we do these reminders all the time but I feel by reading the above, remembering we are keeping our pets safe, no extra vet bills or expenses and most of all we have a happy healthy home.

So now that Layla has woofed all this she is going back to bed LOL,
Be safe and have a great week, With love from Layla

February is nearly over

February is over WOW.  We cannot believe how fast this year is going.

Layla and I have cabin fever. It just does not seem to stop raining here and although she has been very good with walks in the rain, some long, some short we both need some sunny park time to be outdoors relaxing.

Yesterday she was not happy as she got a bath. I am fortunate to be able to get her a free bath once a month through PAWS/Shanti Project which makes life very easy for me as living in a studio when I bathe her the floor becomes a lake LOL, so I take advantage of these free baths. It is also amazing how they always have volunteers from different companies come in to do the bathing so all I have to do is take her there and they do all the work. It is also thanks to Pet Food Express for allowing us to do it there, they are an amazing Pet Food Store and give so much back to the community. If I buy something and Layla does not like it, I can return the open bag and get credit, they have rescued cats up for adoption there, and many rescue organizations do adoption events at their different stores.

Layla of course now loves going there with no arguments like in the past as she knows she gets treats from the employees and what could be better than that.

The past 48 hours have been crazy stormy so yesterday when I was at the store I picked up for her a new chewy which is a turkey tendon and she is in love with them. It keeps her busy during the day and not sleeping that much LOL. Cabin fever can be costly also.

I am working in my new job which is hard but I am enjoying also so am out of the house for about 5 hours each day, I hate leaving Madam but on the other hand it is good for both of us.

So that is what is happening in the Layla Neighborhood, not much excitement but she is being spoiled with lots of Mommy time as I excluding work have no interest in running around in the rain so condense everything into an outing when I leave for work.

Be safe and warm everyone and don’t forget that with all the winds and rain the one thing that is keeping Madam calm is the 4Paws Pet Blend Hemp Oil Supplement. You can read all about it on the below link :

I am not happy BOL

TGIF !!! The week is over !

Happy Friday !!!!!!!!    TGIF  !!!!!!

What a week, I fell ill last weekend, was flat on my back not moving but to walk Layla and am not sure what bug got me but it did.  I was achy, with fever and had no appetite but that did not stop Ms. Piggy from eating and not only that I double fed her on Friday and she happily ate it all. Bless her is all I can say.

I was very blessed to have some friends pop over with food for me and groceries so did not have to worry about anything.

I have been really taking it easy this week, working but otherwise lying low and the rain is not helping either. It is as if someone is standing with a bucket pouring water over us non stop and I wish it would stop. It is just ridiculous and some of the streets are like rivers. I must admit Layla has been really good with the weather and I cannot complain especially as she hates the rain.

That is the reason for my Wednesday Woof being on Friday this week, please accept my apology

For Valentines Day I made Layla one of her favorite dinners so she was happy,  I cooked myself a nice dinner too and my Boss surprised me with Sees Truffles so I feel very spoiled.

You still have time to enter our give away for $ 125.00 dollars worth of products for you and your pets – see below widget and good luck.

One more day to enter

So on this note from rainy San Francisco stay warm and dry all, look after yourselves and chat with you again next week.

Woof with love from Layla and Me

What a week !!! But … it is give away time

It is Wednesday, middle of the week.

What a week we have had, raining non stop that we have hardly gone out and between working and trying to get Layla out when the rain stops it has been exhausting but today the sun is shining and hopefully it will be for a couple of days.

As you all know I watch Layla very carefully health wise as she is getting older like me and am always looking for ways to keep her healthy. I had noticed she was losing weight all of a sudden and was concerned so I took her to the vet a week a ago to find out what was going on. This was a vet I have never used but due to different reasons I had to go to her and it was the biggest mistake of my life. I have never met such a cold person in my life who all she was interested in was how to make money. She did not answer my questions, told me that she had a gum infection and did nothing about it, and in a nutshell I walked out of her clinic nearly in tears and worried big time.

I yesterday went to my regular vet and I walked out of there smiling and relaxed. She gave Layla a proper examination, we did a blood test to check her on the inside and I also found out she had put on one pound phew. I sat with her talking about what I am feeding her, where I am getting the information and she was really happy with what I am doing. She checked her gums and gave me some antibiotics for them although they are not as bad as I thought. I also learned something from her which makes sense and that is :

01. It is better to give her an animal oil than coconut oil.
02. Because of the heater in our building, her skin is drying and she told me to put in her food fish oil and it will help. I do that anyway but am stopping with the coconut oil.
03. Vaccines – she does not think it is necessary for Layla to get this year flu shots, the Leptospirosis shot or any other and that her rabies is good for another 2 years.
04. I showed her the 4Paws Pet Blend Hemp Oil Supplement for Cats or Dogs, and because it has cod liver oil and cold pressed organic, virgin hemp seed oil she liked the product and told me to carry on giving it to her and that is the fish oil that she is getting.
05. I also showed her the 4Paws Topical Relief Balm, and all she said is if it is working that is good.
So, with all this and I being happy with the products for Layla and I am loving the products also we are doing a give away this week for the following products worth $ 125.00 and will be open for Canada and USA residents over the age of 18 years old.
We have become an affiliate with this company so if you are interested in buying their products below is the link :
Restorative Botanicals are sponsoring this give away and it is our first of the year so good luck everyone.
So that has been our week and we hope everyone is staying warm and safe in this cold weather.
On this note I am going back to sleep as the vet visit exhausted me,
